Community Dynamics in Gifting Communities on Reddit -- Under Review
Much HCI work has highlighted how online communities can be a site for exchanging emotional and informational social support. Prior work demonstrates that tangible support is less prevalent online, and work that studies how people share items online tends to focus on localised contexts, where exchange can happen in person. However, in Random Acts communities on Reddit, we see that people are able to creatively leverage online platforms to send and receive tangible items such as food. This project studies these communities to understand how they work and how relationships are formed through exchange in these communities.
